Open Sourcing our Way to the SDGs

As part of Openhack’s involvement in the UN’S Global Week to #ACT4SDGs on 18-26 September 2020, we are hosting a unique panel discussion focused on exploring how the open source way enhances the way we work to achieve the SDGs as envisioned by an exclusive selection of gifted panelists.

In this session, we shall be:

  • discussing how open source (OS) has grown to become a movement & a way of working that reaches beyond software production

  • exploring open source ways of tackling wicked problems as part of the road to reaching the SDGs based on our panelists’ engagements

  • identifying how open source can be a vital part of the efforts to reach the SDGs for both citizens interested in making a difference as well as for 3rd sector organisations, governmental bodies and private sector actors.

    Our panel is composed of:

  • Ben Cerveny (President of the Foundation for Public Code) who is building a Foundation to help cities and other public organizations develop and share what they call Public Code, software and policy that is open, legible, and useful at the civic scale.

  • Ada Nduka Oyom (Founder of She for Africa and Co-founder of Open Source Community Africa), the former being a non-profit organisation focused on empowering young girls and women in Africa through technical skills while the latter is one of the largest communities for open-source enthusiasts, advocates and experts across Africa.

  • Tanmay Bakshi, a 16-year-old author, Developer & Dev Advocate @ IBM, Google Developer Expert for Machine Learning, Youtuber, TED&Keynote speaker. Through his books and his YouTube channel (“Tanmay Teaches”) he shares his research and knowledge with audiences of all ages.

  • Angela Oduor Lungati (Executive Director at Ushahidi) who leads a global non-profit technology company that builds tools for democratising information, increasing transparency and lowering barriers for individuals to raise their voices.

The discussion will be moderated by Inês Boski, Core Team Lead at Openhack.
